bill and rosi---do over of last week

May 22, 2012  --   Small Plates of Grandma Rosi #5

Hello Family,

I went walking this morning and this is what I sang:
Blue skies smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies do I see
Bluebirds singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my, how they fly

Bing Crosby use to sing this song.   A happy, pleasant, positive tune with lyrics.   Our sky was so blue, not a cloud (or difficulty) in it.

This week's recipe:

Lorraine's Spaghetti

This is Grandma Mathews recipe for her famous spaghetti.  In the past two weeks I have made two batches and both have been applauded.  I thought I should pass it along before I forget what I did.  (Other famous dishes prepared by Lorraine includes potato salad, applesauce cake and fried rabbit.   I think that I will pass on the rabbit, but if you'd really like it, I will give it a try.)

1 lb ground beef, browned and drained of fat
26.5 oz  Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce   (mushroom or traditional is best)
1 small can tomato sauce
minced, dried, onion
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic  (I like the type that you buy in a jar and keep in the fridge)
about 2 teaspoons Oregano
1 teaspoon basil
2-3 tablespoons of pickling spice and add some crushed red pepper (both are found in the  spice area of your grocery store)
Pour pickling spice and crushed red pepper into the center of a circle of cheese cloth.  gather up the edges and tie off the spices with an elastic.  Trim off excess
fabric with scissors.  (This is what makes Lorraine's spaghetti unique.  Just can leave it out.)

Combine all ingredients in crock pot and stir.   Cook on low for about 4 hours.  Combine cooked spaghetti noodles with sauce and serve.

Word of the week:

Toxic:  poisonous; many things can be poisonous including foods and relationships.

Saturday Dad and I went with old friends from the Reno area up to the Huntsman Cancer Center to visit our mutual friends, Reneal and Bob Trimble.  Our friend's names are Lizanne and Orson Huntsman.  (Distant relation to John Huntsman.) I want to tell you a story about our early friendship with these folks.

Grandma Rosi and Wasps

As a young girl, I was always afraid of wasps and their relatives.  Early on, if a wasp came into our house, I would leave.  One time, while in school at Utah State, I was driving and a wasp flew in the window.  I stopped the car in the middle of the road and ran.  Once I married Grandpa he gradually convinced me that wasps were not so dangerous and that if I would stay calm they would leave me alone.  So.....   One weekend we went to the Sierra Nevadas with the Huntsmans to go fishing.  (Lizanne is a real fisherwoman.  Rosi is not. Orson and I went along for the ride.)  We woke early to a beautiful morning filled with wasps.  As we ate our pancakes, the wasps would gather on our plates in the syrup.  I was such a good girl.  I remained calm, kept eating and felt pretty good about myself.  Well, after breakfast, we got ready to go fishin'.  Loaded with gear we walked out of camp prepared for a fun day.  Bill led the way as we crossed over the shallow river on a log.  Unbeknownst to all of us, Bill stepped into a yellow jackets nest hidden in the hollow of the log and really stirred them up.  Well, instead of attacking him, they came after me as I was right behind him.  First they attacked my face and I would swat at them until I could feel them stinging and biting me through my jeans, then I started slapping my legs.  Then back and forth... face, legs, face, legs.   Bill was there trying to help me but it was a battle and the yellow jackets were winning.   Finally Lizanne came for us as she had spotted a deep area in the river.  Bill quickly led me there and I went under the water. Needless to say our trip was cut short and we came home.  I had many bites as well as stings and my fear of wasps still remains (but honestly, it is not as bad as it use to be.)  So that is some of the history between the Huntsmans and the Mathews.

We had a very nice day yesterday and were able to spend quality time with Bob and Reneal.  She is so ill and so brave.  Wow, it makes all of us appreciate our good health.  We came home from Salt Lake and ate Grandma Mathews' spaghetti.  Hmmmm good.

Becky and Adam, these are our friends that live in Spring City.  I am sure that you remember our fun visit there.  We showed them Adam's glass ware and they raved.  (I served them water in the glasses.)

It has been another busy but productive week.  Dad is working daily indexing names in Family Search.   I continue to work busily at school.   A concert on Thursday evening went well.  My final concert of the year is this next Tuesday.  (May 22) It looks like we will be going to New York this next school year with a performance at Carnegie Hall.  It is very exciting.  The parent helpers are driving me crazy.  They are so ambitious and want to raise money for all students to go.  They are wearing me out, but I know that they mean well.

Yesterday (Saturday) in the morning I was in charge of a skit for our Visiting Teaching Celebration.   It was adorable.  I was given the script.  My only job was to direct it.  We had six women who were ants"  Obedi "ant", Dilig "ant", Persist "ant", Serv "ant" and more.  They were dressed all in black and had antenna with red hearts on the end of the antenna.   Four of the women were 80 years old or more.  I had them marching and acting beyond their own belief....cute, cute, cute.  It was fun and it was nice to be contributing.

Love you guys.

Note:  Dixie is having her gall badder removed tomorrow.  Keep her in your prayers.
Second note:  Dad's 70th birthday is the weekend of Roderick's graduation.  Do you think that we could celebrate while in Las Vegas?  Can you think of something fun to do?

Hello Family,

I've been in Logan and Paradise this weekend for Memorial Day.  I'm drawn to that area anyway but always enjoy being there especially on Memorial Day.

The Sorensens and I visited the Logan, Hyrum and Paradise cemeteries on a stormy, rainy Sunday afternoon.  It was wet and cold for most of the weekend, but Monday the sun came out and it was lovely.  I spent Saturday night with the Sorensens and Sunday night at the Clifford log house with Luke's family, Kathy, Linc's family and Dix and Linc.  Way fun...lots of great food.

Speaking of the food, Dad and I spent about 3 hours on Saturday morning making potato salad.   10 lbs of spuds, 18 boiled eggs, lots of celery, onion, mayo and mustard.  It turned out great!   Dad peeled 33 potatoes.  It wore him out, but it is fun for us to work together and I know he enjoyed it.

On Saturday, I arrived in Logan in time for Deb's birthday party.  It was very fun.  There were 5 of us at the party and after eating some specialty foods ...  including a neopolitan cake...  the hostess pulled out separate containers for all of us to soak our feet in.  It seemed so odd, but actually felt very good soaking our feet in HOT water and then giving ourselves  pedicures.  They had at least 50 different nail polish colors and pedicure tools.

Recipe for the week:

Added at the bottom of this letter is Grandma Mathews' Applesauce Cake recipe.  It was interesting that Carol would send it our way just when I was planning to put it together for all of you as our weekly recipe.  It is Big Bill's very favorite cake.  Sadly, I can never make it as good as he remember's his Moms.

I just opened a package from Roderick.   Pictures!!   Yea, I love pictures.  You are one handsome Dude, Rick!!!   We are looking forward to attending your graduation on June 18th.  Other important June dates include:  Bryce's birthday on June 1, Dad's 70 BD on June 17, (also Father's Day) and Bec & Adams's Anniversary June 28th.   (Four years for the Frus'!!!)

Last Tuesday was my final Choir Concert for the year.  It was great, "magic"...  in places.  I battled all year to bring our A Cappella and Chamber Choir up to par, and on Tuesday they did it.  Good timing, I must admit.  We made a fundraising evening out of it.  We held a bake sale that day beginning at 3 pm.  Tables were set up in the trees on the East side of our school.  Students stood in choir robes along Center Street waving signs and luring patrons in to purchase baked items.  Wow, there were fabulous goodies...   I purchased a delicious cinnamon roll, pumpkin chocolate chip cake,  breads and candied apple.  The excitement was palpable and carried on  into the lobby for entertainment prior to our concert and a silent auction...  and then on into our concert which began at 7 pm.  (We made over $2,000 on the bake sale.)

Word for the week:
"palpable":  capable of being touched or felt, tangible.

Love you all.  Hope you have a wonderful week.

Love Mom

tim and jill

Hello  Family…(I am up way too late this evening, doing MomME things while the house is quiet :) )

So nice to always hear how everyone is doing!  We are all doing well.  Tim is anxiously awaiting his interview for the Program Director position.  It’s so funny because it’s clear that his boss wants to hire him for the position, but they are making him go through all the protocols first.  Tim has done such AMAZING things for the Boys Town site here…I am excited to see what he will do as Program Director!

Tim and the kids were so sweet to me for Mother’s Day.  I love them so much and am so lucky to have such a great husband and two of the best little kids in the whole wide world!

Elle, Liam and I planted a flower garden this past week and it is beautiful!  We love taking care of it together and finding caterpillars, earthworms, and other fun bugs and insects.  Elle recently has taken a liking to especially caterpillars and will do anything to save their lives.   Elle is also having her 5th birthday party with all of her pre-school friends this Saturday, so I have been busy planning the birthday festivities and hand making all her decorations, gift bags, etc...!  Oh my, it’s a lot of work, but super fun!  My scrapbooking skills are coming in handy!  She had 16 kids RSVP for the party!!!  Whoohoo…this is going to be FUN entertaining little ones.  She is having a Cowgirl party using the theme of Toy Story’s Jessie.  For the party, we are having a cowgirl/cowboy fashion show, scavenger hunt, doing the limbo and having a cookout!  I have had to get really creative to stay within my budget!    I’ve been calling her my little “Ellie Sue Cowgirl” and she just loves it!  We found her a little outfit so she can Cowgirl it up at her Party!!!  Thank you Dad, Mom, and Debbie for the birthday cards they were very thoughtful.   Thank you Dad especially for the phone call to Ellie, it meant soooo much to her to hear from Grandpa!

Liam is doing well.  He is a momma’s boy lately.  He really has been enjoying Yoga Story Time or as he calls it “WOGA time".  He gets to make yoga poses like animals and sea life and then makes their sounds.  He is ADORABLE!!!  My favorite part is at the end there is mommy/toddler cuddle time and he just loves to snuggle up to me and takes his deep breaths.  It is the sweetest thing EVER!

The weather is finally getting warm here and we will be enjoying the beaches very soon.  We miss you all.  Tim is planning to come out for Roderick’s graduation.  I am so happy it will work out.  Thank you Marlies for helping make it possible!  I’m sad we all can’t come out, but I know Tim will be a great support for Roderick!  We are so proud of Roderick and are thankful for Marlies and Melissa for helping him so much!

Lots of Love to you all!!!

kathy fueston

What a wonderful message Marlies.  Thanks for sharing.  The Mathews clan (includes that dear Melissa) have been a blessing in Roderick’s life and in turn, he has been a blessing to you as well. So awesome!  Can’t help but see God’s hand in our lives.

Love to you all!

ben and tamme

Its been an interesting week in Texas.  Full of poop.  Sadee, Kole and mouse poop.

We have started potty training Sadee and she is....I don't know.  Some times I think maybe she is getting it, but then again I don't think so.  She is really good at telling me she went potty in her panties, not so good at before.  Its hard to get mad at that cute little bum.

Baseball and softball end this week.  Kloey had her last game tonight and got 2 hits.  She had a dry spell for a few games, but finally got a couple tonight.  It seemed to light a fire in her.  She was more vocal and was having more fun.  They lost, but made a good run for it in end.

Father and sons is this weekend and I don't know who is more excited Kloey or Kael.  Kael loves this time with Ben and Kloey always come up with a list of things for us girls to do.

Ben has been very busy the last few weeks.  Between work, softball and church he's rarely around.  Today he went to play lazer tag and whirleyball with his co-workers and partners.  He said he had fun, but he's not the best lazer tag player.  He got second to last on the score board.

Hope your week has been good so far.  We love you and miss you all.

Hello my dear family
What a week this has been.  I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for each of you.
We are all so lucky and so blessed – through our hardest times, it is all of you that get me through.  It is amazing how our Heavenly Father supports us.

I had such a sweet moment with Roderick and Melissa last night.  Roderick came into my room and plopped himself down on my bed then proceeded to hit me with his new Mission Prep Manual.  He had just returned from the class and had a glow about him.  He wanted to teach me what he had just learned about the atonement and the Plan of Salvation.  We sat there for the next hour talking about how important the atonement is – How part of it is a gift to us from god (Mercy) but how we have to work and claw our way out of sin through repentance and Faith (Justice).  Our conversation led to the potential that is in all of us.  Satan is going to try to hold us down because he understands our potential and strength.  It is us who have to believe and have faith in that potential and find that inner strength.  It is amazing that even at 39 years old I still struggle with that and need to be reminded.

Laurel’s wedding was beautiful.  Cristi and Howard did a beautiful job.  I felt so lucky to be a part of their beautiful family.  I sure missed you all and would have loved to fill up a table with the Mathews Clan.  I was so grateful that Luke, Amy and Dad were there.  It was nice to hold onto them.

I love you all

Dear Mathews Family,

First of all Happy Mother's Day to all of you wonderful women. Rosemary, you and Dixie are our matriarchs and mentors. We are so very lucky to have you two lead and guide and influence our lives in such a positive way. We love you both so dearly!

It has been so neat to be a part of these emails and to hear about what is going on in each of your lives. You may be my cousins but I feel like you are more my brothers and sisters. I love each of you!
It was a wonderful weekend and Laurel and Jordan (Johnson) are a beautiful couple. Everything went so well and the sealing was sweet. The reception was lovely. The only sad thing for me is I did NOT get enough time with Luke, Amy, Bill and Marlies. I saw you for a second at the reception and went to find you and you were gone. (So sad!) I wanted to do some more catch up with you. Amy, the girls looked so cute in their dresses. The frame with quotes from the kid's sealing and their picture was so DEAR! Loved it!

Rose, thanks for doing your weekly letters. This had been a treasure to enjoy all of your messages and updates. Each of you are dear to my hearts!

Love to all!

Hello Family,

I hope you are having a wonderful Mothers Day.

I had an awesome walk this morning.  I was at the Sorensen home and rose early to take a "stroll down memory lane".

First stop was the Logan Temple.  Two weeks ago in Sunday School we had a discussion about the teachings of King Benjamin.  The question was asked “what did you learn from your parents?”  That thought has caused me considerable reflection.  Today, as I stood pondering (in front of the Logan Temple) I studied that beautiful old building and thought of the men (and women) who had labored for no pay and brought their very best in creating this building to the Lord.  It stands tall, strong and with great dignity.  I wondered if the rest of us were measuring up to our pioneers’ standard. Maybe our contributions are not seen in stone and mortar, but maybe our contributions are what we teach and inspire others to do.  Maybe we are building temples (castles) in the sky.

As I walked the streets towards Utah State I walked past my first apartment that I lived in in 1964.  It was neat to reflect on the fun I had there and in particular the snowball fight my roommates and I had with the "boys next door."  (We actually broke our front door trying to hide from the barrage of snowballs that were thrown at us.)

I stopped more than once to smell the wonderful lilac bushes that grew close to the sidewalk.  At one point, while pausing to inhale the flower's fragrance, I thought  "what if there is a bee in that flower.  It might sting me on my nose.  Now that wouldn't be nice, would it?"  So, needless to say, I was a bit more careful after that.

My next stop was Utah State and Old Main.  I climbed those 122 steps counting each one.  Then sat and rested and looked out over the beautiful Cache Valley, so green and lovely.  So home....
Word for the week:  ??  will have to wait for next week.
Recipe for the week:   likewise

It has been a very busy week and I am glad it is over. Dad went with Luke's family to Las Vegas for Laurel's wedding.  I will be glad to see him.

I love you all.

Hi Fam

Sorry that you only got 2/3's of my message this past week.  We have been having internet issues and some how, when it was finally working, part of my message got cut off.  I went home and tried to send it again last night but there were "issues" again.  I will get "the rest of the fishin' story" to you soon.

Sure love you all!

Hello Family

We had a great Sunday this week - Roderick received his Patriarchal Blessing.  He was very nervous and very sweet.  The patriarch spoke to what an amazing spirit he has and the potential he has to influence others for good.  He talked about a mission and about keeping his eye focused on what is important to his eternal salvation.  It was a great day.

We are very excited for Roderick’s graduation.  We are sending out invitations this week. Let me know if you don’t get yours.  I can’t wait until we can all be together again.

We have our journey of hope event next week.  It should be amazing as we are honoring Dana White – the head of UFC.  We already have great auction items.  The best is two center row floor tickets to a Miami Heat game, two first class airline tickets, and a signed game ball by the entire team.   It is very exciting and kind of the end to the things I worked on as the Exec. Director.

I am getting really excited for our trip to Alaska.  I need to get a picture of me with a grizzly bear J  so I can continue on with my quest to scrapbook all of the states quarters……

Love you all Marlies

Greetings dear Family from Las Vegas

Things are good here.  We are in the last month of Roderick's senior year.  I can't believe how big he has gotten.  I know that seems crazy as I got a 17 year old 6 foot teenager.  But he just seems to have grown into a man the last few months.  He has such a great heart and loves to wrestle.  Makes me think of Luke as I try to escape his iron grasps.  Makes me miss the good old days :)
His all star game practices start in a week.  The game is June 2nd.  He will be starting defense for sure, but will probably be playing some offense as well.  He is really out of shape but super excited.   His announcements should be coming out next week.  His pictures turned out great.  Hope you will all make it to his graduation.

This week is a crazy busy week for me as Next week I am off to Omaha for the annual Program Operations Conference.
As soon as I get back, we have our annual fundraiser - honoring Dana White.  He is the president of the UFC.  IT IS A HUGE DEAL.  I am really excited and hope things go well.  I actually got him approved to honor while I was the acting Executive Director.  It was a big adjustment for Boys Town as it is all about boxing.  We are now seeing the fruit of all that labor.  It is looking like it may end up being one of the biggest events Boys Town has ever had.  We have a lot of work to do...but everyone should be here to help us celebrate.

Melissa is good - excited for school to end.

We love you all and miss you like crazy.  Be good and be happy

May 6, 2012                     Small Plates of Rosi  #3

Hi Everyone!!!

Another week has come and gone.  Wow.  What has happened to all of you this week?  Hope you are well and happy.   Thanks to those who responded to last week’s letter.  It is so fun to hear what you are doing!!!!

This is what I know:

Sorensen family:  Claire Bear had her tonsils and adenoids removed plus tubes put into her ears.  She spoke with me just a few hours afterwards and said:  “Hi Grandma Rosi.  I am sick.”  (and she didn’t sound sick at all.  I was amazed that she could even talk.)  Claire, thanks for being so brave.  Now it is Matthew’s turn…  on Monday at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake..  (If he is well enough.)

Ben Mathews family:  Tamme, thanks for sharing your life with children with us in your recent letter.  Taking care of 5 kids….  now that is a big job.

Tim Mathews family:  Elle is about to turn five years old.  That is amazing!!!

Frus family: Adam and Becky are a great team.  Becky will be making a presentation at the National Geographic Society’s Convention.  Adam will be putting together an exhibit of his many rocks and minerals for that same convention.  (I hope I got that right, Adam.)
What a lovely honor.  You two are great.

Marlies family:  Rick is excited to be graduating from high school.  (I hear that he is smiling a lot right now.) We are all happy for him!!!  Several of our clan will be at their home this next weekend for Laurel’s wedding.

Luke Mathews family:  Big Luke has been doing a lot of traveling but he has still found time to purchase a large tent trailer and has plans to place it on a larger trailer so that he can carry the family’s toys with them on holidays.

Mountain View High School:   I have completed selecting the choirs for next year.  We had the annual “kidnapping” breakfast yesterday at 6:00 a.m. for the 38 new members of Chamber Choir.  I worry about what crazy things the kidnappers might do to the inductees.   I threaten the kids with their lives to make things “fun” not “crazy”.  There was a good spirit at the breakfast and no one had to be taken to the hospital, so I guess it was okay.  (Next year I am thinking that we should just “send out letters” to notify the new choir members. It would be safer.)  After the breakfast I went to the school, completed tweaking the choices for the other classes and then posted them on the back glass doors at the school so that the kids could come by and see which choir they were placed in.  I don’t mean to make this such a big deal, but somehow there are tears shed and hearts hurt. 130 kids in A Cappella, 60 in our new women’s choir, Con Brio and more.

Big Bill Mathews:  He travelled with a ward member to help him deliver “homes for sale” signs in Salt Lake and Davis counties on Friday.  They were gone for about 10 hours.  Dad came home tired but feeling good that he could help someone.

Words that I use in my classroom as I try to teach principals of life:

Word from last week:
RALLY:   to pick yourself up and succeed when you think you are defeated.  (The Utah Jazz need to study this word…down 3-0 against San Antonio in the playoffs.)

Word for this week:
MEEK:  humble use of power

Recipe for this week:

Helona’s Cheese Cake

Prepare and bake graham cracker crust (350 degrees, 12-15 minutes)

Mix:
12 oz   cream cheese (room temperature)
¾ cup sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
2-3 Tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice

Pour mixture into crust and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.  Cool a bit.

Mix and pour on top of cooled pie:
8 oz sour cream
3 T sugar
1 t vanilla

Bake for an additional 10 minutes

Completely cool then cover with real whipped cream.

Helona is a dear friend and neighbor.  She is 80 years old and is a good cook.  I love her.

I love all of you as well.  Have a wonderful Sabbath Day.

Hello Everyone!

Matthew is the craziest kid. He started throwing his binky at me in January and won't take one anymore. He has adopted his sister's philosophy that thumbs are the only way to go. Even when he is so congested that he breathes out of his mouth, his thumb is still in there, while he sounding like Darth Vadar. Marlies, this kid should be your favorite. Anyway, Matthew has a reputation in Nursery on Sundays. Every week I come in to do the singing time with the Nursery kiddos. A few weeks ago there was some new kid named...brace yourself...Cloud (it's a boy) whimpering from a leader's lap. I started singing, figuring that it's pretty normal for the new kids in Nursery to be upset because they are away from their parents. Well...This was a different kind of circumstance. Matthew has evidently been chasing the kid with long hair around trying to hold his hair in one hand and suck his thumb in the other. It is usually well tolerated by the kiddos because he's pretty gentle. Not so with little Cloud. Our own Chunky Monkey can cause this kid to shower by chasing after him and then drooling all over him. Fellow Cousins, be prepared. Awesome.

I will have more stories for you next week, I'm sure.

love you all,
nick, deb, claire and chunky

adam and becky

Good day to you all.  I suppose that I'll get in on the conversations too.  I can't let Becky do all the typing anyway.  With the amount of papers and projects that she has been working on, I imagine her fingers are tired.  We are sure excited about the end of the semester coming up.  It has been a whirlwind this year and the short respite from the daily grind will be well received by us.  There is just one more big push before we can put our feet up though.  That's right GSA!... and finals!  The Geological Society of America has its meeting here in ABQ this year and we are both going to be involved.  Becky will be leading some field trips s well as presenting an overview of her PhD project in a poster session.  I will be once again putting our minerals and a bunch of my glass up for sale.  Some of you may have seen images of one of the crystals that I am making now.  The series has a whole lot of room to grow and I have been learning a lot of new techniques to produce quality, finished pieces of art.  Mostly, that means that I have been working with sheet metal, creating bases and sculptural elements to mount these new glass pieces on.

I have to take a moment to reflect on the positive side of tough situations.  If you remember, I used to work for a glass artist who was a real bully and had me tucking my tail and feeling really trapped and negative. Thanks to Marlies, Becky and Nick (my cousin) for helping me see the necessity to quit that job and abusive situation.  Well, I am far out enough though that I can see all the great things that I learned from that job though.  My boss was really great with metal, a material that I had not ever worked before.  I evidently learned a lot, because now it is all coming together.  So, just remember that when you are in a tough spot, there is always something positive to find hidden in all the rough.

On a lighter side, Elizabeth is chugging along.  She is learning to let us know what she wants and does not want.  When we ask if she wants "blank" she will either sing "No, NO, no" and gently push it away or she will give an emphatic growl, single head nod and short "yes" sound.  Sometimes I have to point at quite a few thing before I get the "yes."  Really , she growls a lot when she is happy.  It makes us LAUGH... A lot.  She has also created a bunch of little games for herself.  She has always enjoyed making piles of things and then moving the pile to a new place.  Back and forth she goes.  Now she has little jars which she runs around filling with either rocks from the yard or water from the wheel barrow that I fill for her to play in.  She likes to fill the cup holders on our outside chairs with rocks.  We also have a game where I hide some painted rocks around our outside rock garden and then she goes around looking for them and making a pile near my feet.  What a joy.

Fun to hear about baseball season down in Texas.  We need some pics of little Kole and his siblings.  Good luck to Ben for his bicycle road trek.  That is a big round trip.

Well, this is the Frus Family signing off.  Talk with you all again soon.

We are in the middle of the baseball and softball season.  Kloey and Kael are hitting better, now to work on their running.  Kael likes to watch where he hit the ball and poor Kloey inherited her mothers running skills.  Scandal has rocked the Princeton sports association and a group of people are trying to organize another program.  Should be interesting.

Kloey was top reader in 3rd grade again this past 6 weeks.  The reading goal is 14 points and she earned 101.  It is her goal to get top reader each term and she enjoys working on it.  I'm pretty sure she has read more books than I have.  She is reading The Secret Garden right now and is enjoying it.  She will read pretty much anything I buy her and Target has had some in the dollar section lately.  She just finished the 3rd book in the Eragon series and is waiting for us to get the last one.

Kael was the top reader in his class again.  It is a competition for him.  And I think he is starting to enjoy reading, so I am glad.  He has a new favorite song, What Makes You Beautiful, by One Direction.  You can hear him singing it all around the house.  At last weeks game, Kael got in a pickle between 3rd and home.  He fell down as he turned back to 3rd, but the catcher dropped the ball so he made it.  After the game he told Ben "that when I fell down, I thought it was over."

Galilee and Sadee love to hold Kole.  Sadee will say "baby lap".  She doesn't really hold him, he just lays across her lap and she beams at him.  Galilee asks to hold him all the time.  I catch her squeezing him close and giving him kisses.  She just loves him.

Kole is growing like a weed.  He up to 11 pounds and 22.5 inches.  He is so sweet and mild tempered.  I have to remind myself that he is only 3 weeks old.  I feel like he's been around forever already.

Ben is good.  He is trying to get ready for High Adventure in June.  They are planning a round trip bike ride to Paris, TX- which is 70 miles away.  I think they are crazy, but he is kinda excited about it.

Hope all is well with you and yours!

Hello Family

Well, another week has past.  Wow, the time goes so fast.  Look out, the older I get, the faster the time seems to go.  I sure hope that things have gone well for all of you.  Hope that the emotional bumps and bruises have healed and that you are moving on down the road.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TIMMY MATHEWS TOMORROW!  Let's see, how old are you Son?  I believe it is 35.  That may seem old to you, but Dad would argue as he will soon be 70!!!

This is my month of festivals at school.  We have had three choirs qualify for State.  I have also listened to about 200 auditions over the past few weeks.  You know, it is tough to "do right" by all of these kids.  Each with their own special problems and needs, talents and energies.  I will post the results this Friday and then "get out of Dodge".

I saw the sweetest little baby at Walmart. It made me think of our babies so later that day, I gave Parker a big love and wished that I could also meet, hold and love the new little guy in Texas.  Kole GIDEON!!  (I've been reading about Gideon in the scriptures.)  I took the opportunity to dust and straighten the pictures of our grandbabies that hang in Dad's room.  The picture of Elizabeth is as an infant.  She has maybe made the greatest change since we saw her.  I know that Sadee has also really grown.  There are 3 pictures missing.  One of that great big kid that lives in Las Vegas...  and of course Parker and Kole.
Thanks so much for our beautiful grandchildren.   Dad and I spend time sitting and looking at pictures in his room.  Whether they are on the wall or on the computer screen.  We love them all!!!

Friday night something special happened.  A big ole Yukon SUV pulled up in front of our door and out poured five Mathews (with a 6th in hand) with garden equipment.  They spent the next two hours in our yard fixing sprinkling systems, pulling weeds, fertilizing the lawn and more.  It meant so much.  Thanks Luke, Amy, Tyler, Emma and Quincey for all of your help.

Dad and I recently had a meeting with a financial consultant.  (Triggered in part by Tim's family).  He has put us on a "financial diet".  He has challenged us to begin living on the amount of money we will have after I retire.  That is like going on a diet before you really need to.  BUT I know that it will help to get us ready for the future.

I don't think that I have told you this:  a recent personal decision was that I need to be more positive and LAUGH MORE.  Usually my laugh (at least when watching a funny movie) is a weak little smile. (no sound.)  So, I have been practicing LAUGHING.  I go into the gym in the early morning before the lights have been turned on, and I walk.  (The green exit signs give me just enough light that I can tell where I am.)   It has been the perfect time to "practice" laughing.  It has been pretty crazy but with no one to hear me, I can put out some pretty good fake laughs.  I told my A Cappella choir about my attempts to be more positive and one popular, bright, senior raised his hand and said "now, what time do you walk?".  Wanting to listen in on my crazy attempt to laugh.  Do you kids remember that about once a year when you were growing up I would have a laughter blow out  where once I got started laughing I could not stop?  (I think I was making up for all of the lost laughter in one swoop.)  I haven't done that in years. I kinda miss it.

Word for the week:  "Squander"  waste of precious time.
Word for next week:  "rallly" to pick yourself up and succeed when you think you are defeated.

Bodyslam for week:   Petal.  She bit me again.  But I forgave her and we are friends.

Laurel's wedding is two weeks away.  It should be beautiful.
